Over the past 150 years, the Schwertner family has grown its legacy from 200 acres of black dirt on the Dunahue Creek to 23,000 acres of improved pasture land.

In the heart of Central Texas, where rugged landscapes and time-honored traditions intersect, lies a family legacy deeply rooted in the cattle industry. For over 150 years, the Schwertner family has upheld a tradition of unwavering commitment to the land, their community, and the values that have sustained their success. This is the story of Capitol Land & Livestock and the Schwertner family, a tale that epitomizes the quintessential Texan spirit.

Jim Schwertner, the guardian of this legacy, reflects with pride on what makes his family's business unique. "Everything's done on a handshake. There aren’t many businesses left that rely on that anymore," he says. It's the people, their hard work, their toughness that have kept the family's enterprise thriving through the decades.

The Schwertner saga began when Jim's great-grandfather, Adolph, ventured to Texas in 1875, settling on a modest 200-acre plot near Dunahue Creek. Fast forward to today, and their humble beginnings have evolved into 23,000 acres of thriving pastureland. The monumental gateway to Schwertner, Texas, is marked by the sprawling pens and limestone headquarters of Capitol Land & Livestock, an enduring testament to their journey.

As you approach, the boisterous chorus of cattle and the earthy aroma of the ranch greet you, setting the scene for an authentic Texan experience. Here, even in the modern era, the sight of cowboys on horseback working the pastures remains a common sight. Schwertner notes with a grin, "We have some four wheelers, but we prefer horseback. The cows aren't as nervous."

Capitol Land & Livestock thrives on the dedication of its 120-strong workforce, turning stock every 24 hours, with a tireless work ethic that keeps the wheels turning. The roots of this remarkable enterprise trace back to Jim's parents, Eugene and Gloria, who initiated one of the first public cattle auctions in Austin in 1946. These auctions transformed the cattle trade, providing improved profits for ranchers and a lasting legacy for the Schwertner family.

Jim's own journey in the skies began early, inspired by a chance encounter at the Hondo Auction, where he witnessed planes taking off and landing on former Air Force runways. This childhood fascination with aviation led to his first solo flight at 16 and, ultimately, a career in the skies. His father, Eugene, recognizing Jim's passion, offered him a jet and a chance to serve the Schwertner Cattle Company from the cockpit.

Returning to central Texas after earning his degree, Jim brought a new dimension to the family business, offering faster and more efficient transportation. Today, with a Citation jet and a trusty helicopter, he crisscrosses the country to serve his customers, all while maintaining a close connection with his family.

Jim's devotion to Texas A&M University, although he didn't attend, led to his appointment to the Board of Regents, a position he held from 2009 to 2015. This enduring love for the Aggies is symbolized by his commitment to the university and its values.

In 2021, Capitol Land & Livestock marked 75 years in the business. The journey has been a testament to hard work, resilience, and a commitment to enduring values. Jim Schwertner, a "cross-bred rancher and aviator," continues to steer the ship, cherishing the heritage that has defined his family for generations.

As we delve deeper into the story of Capitol Land & Livestock and the Schwertner family, we uncover a narrative of tradition, innovation, and an unyielding spirit that defines what it means to be a Texan cattleman.
