TX Longhorns

There is no other animal that represents Texas better than the Texas Longhorn. In addition to their majestic beauty and grace, the breed’s expansive horns is more proof that “Everything is bigger in Texas.” Many ranchers and their guests enjoy watching the grace with which they move their heads and negotiate their massive frames amid brush and mesquite throughout the ranch.

If you have or desire to have these magnificent animals on your ranch, there are a few things you can do to encourage horn growth. First, remember genetics play a significant role in developing this breed of cattle with long, massive horns.  So, selecting the right breeding stock is crucial for achieving your desired outcome.

Below are a few more factors that play a role in horn development:

  • Proper Nutrition: Good nutrition for healthy horn development requires a balanced diet rich in protein, minerals (especially calcium and phosphorus), and vitamins.
  • Grazing Management: Access to high-quality forage and pasture provides a diverse diet.
  • Mineral Supplementation:  Deficiencies in minerals can hinder horn growth, so provide access to mineral supplements formulated specifically for cattle.
  • Avoid Stress: Overcrowding, excessive handling, and abrupt changes in diet will stress the animals and can negatively impact horn growth.
  • Regular Health Checks: Regular veterinary check-ups are helpful to maintain overall health.
  • Age:  Horn growth tends to increase with age, so allowing Longhorns to mature naturally can also promote horn development.
  • Environmental Factors: Adequate shelter and protection from extreme weather conditions are factors that can affect overall health and growth.
